October 19, 2023

Our Chief Market Analyst has appeared several times on the BBC in recent months, with viewers keen to hear Tim Waterer’s take on the latest news and trends in the market. His latest appearance occurred on Monday October 16th, where the BBC invited Tim onto the Asia Business Report program.

During the discussion with host Arunoday Mukharji, Tim previewed the many key events for the week ahead which could influence financial markets. Tim was asked to provide his thoughts on a batch of Chinese macroeconomic indicators due for release, as well as what the latest GDP print from the world’s second largest economy could mean with regards to the achievability or otherwise of China’s annual growth target of 5%.

The interview then turned discussion towards the conflict in the Middle East. Whilst humanitarian concerns are first and foremost, the Israel-Hamas conflict can also have an impact on global financial markets. Tim noted that oil and gold have been two assets which have reacted to the conflict, and that investors will be on the lookout for any signs of escalation which could impact market sentiment.

During the informative conversation, attention turned to the Q3 earnings season taking place in the US. Tim shared his thoughts on how traders will be closely watching to see how well the US corporate sector has handled another quarter where monetary conditions tightened again, following the FOMC’s interest rate hike in July. Tim also discussed the upcoming earnings expectations for companies including Goldman Sachs, Netflix, and Tesla.
